Welcome App is a meaningful non-profit initiative that offers a warm welcome to newcomers in the Netherlands. During the Mendix Low-Code for Good hackathon, a first prototype was actively developed. After the event, Blue Green Solutions offered to continue working with Welcome App to evolve the application into a user-friendly and scalable platform.
Welcome App is a social platform that connects newcomers in the Netherlands with local residents. By encouraging conversations, meetups, and sharing practical information, the app helps newcomers expand their social network and feel more at home in their new environment.
The core ambition of Welcome App is clear: to bring people together, regardless of background or language. But that last part was a real challenge. Many users don’t speak Dutch or English, while meaningful contact with local residents depends heavily on communication.
In addition, as a non-profit startup, Welcome App had limited resources—both in terms of budget and Mendix expertise. After participating in the Mendix Low-Code for Good hackathon, where the app’s foundation was built, further development seemed out of reach due to the high costs of traditional development routes.

Shortly after the hackathon, we reached out to Welcome App. Our message was simple: “You still don’t have a working app? Let’s finish this together.”
We kicked off with an Extended Prototyping approach, focused on rapid iterations, close collaboration, and delivering directly usable results. Within three months, a fully functional platform was live.
The biggest innovation? Realtime translation in the chat function. Thanks to automatic translation, users can communicate in their own language while the other person receives an instant translation. This enables real interaction, right from the first message.

It was also very important that Welcome App would not remain dependent on an external implementation partner. We ensured extensive knowledge transfer, training, and co-creation, so that the Welcome App team can now make their own changes and enhancements to the application.
Welcome App is now active in multiple locations and continues to grow. Thanks to the flexibility of the low-code foundation, new features can be added quickly and easily.

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
