The University of Twente is a well renowned university that yearly has around 12.000 students and approximately 4.000 employees. The University of Twente was founded to make a social and economic difference in the region. Over the years, it has developed into an innovative and entrepreneurial university with an increasing focus on the international playing field. The combination between engineering, science, entrepreneurship and society makes The University of Twente unique in the Netherlands.
The Mendix AppFactory is a concept that enables organizations to get to a higher degree of control on their IT Innovation projects, while also being able to speed up the surrounding processes. This enables organizations to meet continuous automation demands around core processes and strategic decisions. While increasing agility with shorter lead times and predictable delivery.
One of the challenges was to relieve the IT department of the University of Twente to be the sole responsible agent in digital innovation. And pave the way to a culture of co-creation of custom software.The university wanted to keep up with the current state of technology and agile work practices, hence the choice of Mendix as the innovation platform and the AppFactory framework as the optimal organizational approach.
There is a trend in higher education to embrace low-code, the university hopes that by joining this development and implementing the AppFactory, that they can achieve far-reaching cooperation with other higher education institutions. And hope to develop and exchange IT components in the near future.
The main goal of Blue Green goes beyond building a few applications, it is to support and accelerate IT innovation and empower our customer, the University of Twente to keep the same pace of innovation also when our assignment is complete.
Blue Green was involved in setting up both the IT structure as well as the organizational culture of co-creation. We helped shape an internal Mendix development team, and guided Product Owners and Stakeholders alike in working agile. Besides this, Mendix Experts from Blue Green acted as the solution architects while forming the Mendix center of excellence at the University of Twente.
During the whole enablement process of the organization, we partnered with Mendix to make sure that we jointly implemented the AppFactory through the Start-Structure-Scale philosophy and made use of the best practices available.
Currently the portfolio backlog is filled with over 16 initiatives. The Mendix Appfactory is producing applications in a very effective way. The Product Owners and stakeholders are excited to build more applications and get rid of big and small ‘pains’ within the organization. Best Practices implemented for the AppFactory are now picked up in other parts of the IT department and working Agile has gotten a boost throughout the organization as a whole.

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
